Before You Sleep With Him

The 10 Practices of the Dating With Discernment Method™

It isn't a book you read. It's a season you run.

What I'm actually asking you to do

Give it a season. Three months of slow dating. Stay out of the bedroom, work your practices, and get to know him.

Not ninety days as a rule you're white-knuckling, and not a challenge with a finish line and a countdown. A season. Long enough to see him under stress, under disappointment, under inconvenience, and up against a boundary. If you've seen all four by week six, the season did its job.

A season won't cost you the right man. It'll cost you the wrong one, which is the entire point.

The season is how you meet him. The practices are how you live.

What's in every chapter

  • The lesson. What the practice is, and what it's protecting.
  • The science. Cited plainly, and hedged where the evidence is suggestive rather than settled.
  • The story. Mine, at full specificity, including the parts that don't flatter me.
  • The practice. What you actually do.
  • The rhythm. Daily, weekly, and while dating.
  • The resources. Where to go deeper.
  • The benchmark. How you know it's holding, revisited over time.

What this isn't

It isn't anti-sex. I want you to have more sex, with someone you actually chose, for longer. Nothing here says sex is bad or that less of it is better. It says information comes before bonding, because bonding compromises the information.

It isn't about your worth. You didn't lose anything. Not value, not respect, not some finite thing that gets used up. What you lost was the window where you could still see him clearly. That's a sequencing problem, and sequencing problems have solutions.

It isn't therapy, and I'm not a clinician. I'm not going to regulate your nervous system. I'm going to show you what depletion does to who you choose, and give you the practices that keep you out of it. If what's underneath this needs a practitioner in the room, I'll say so.

It isn't a program you finish. There's no graduation here. You don't complete equanimity any more than you complete being strong. A challenge ends and the pattern comes back. A practice holds.

I lived every page of this. I'd rather you find this map now than at 47.
