About

Hi, I'm Alexis.

Discernment Mentor. Single mom. Twenty years of getting this wrong, and a few of finally understanding why.

Nine years ago I stood outside the Nevada County office with child support paperwork in my hand, nursing my two-year-old son, crying.

I'd married at 36, into a relationship that I knew deep down wasn't fully compatible. Divorced at 39. And standing there in that parking lot, the only thought I could find was: I did this.

I was half right.

I had ignored every warning sign. Every single one. I could have listed them from memory, and for years I did, because a list of my own faults at least felt like an explanation.

It didn't change anything. I got engaged again, that time to a narcissist, and spent a year and a half inside emotional, psychological, and financial abuse that I had also seen coming.

The morning that changed the question

Then at 47, a week before my birthday, I was standing in front of a mirror with my grey roots coming in, processing another breakup, and I finally asked something other than why do I keep choosing the wrong man.

That question only ever produced the list. It had never once produced a change.

The better question was this: what's happening inside me that keeps producing this result?

So I went looking. Functional medicine. A gut health specialist. Somatic therapy, as a patient, which is where I first felt the difference between understanding something and my body actually believing it. Years of research into attachment, bonding, stress physiology, and what depletion does to judgment.

It turned out I wasn't choosing wrong. I was choosing from survival, and nobody had ever told me there was a difference.

That's the whole thing. When you're depleted, your system stops evaluating and starts seeking relief, and whoever supplies relief gets read as chemistry. It isn't a character flaw and it isn't a standards problem. It's physiology, and it's the reason twenty years of self-development didn't touch it.

Everything here comes from decades of curiosity, research, studying with the experts, and living every bit of it myself. I'm 48, I'm still dating, and I'm testing all of it in real time. I'll tell you where it's hard.

Why Discernment Mentor, and not dating coach

Four different jobs, and the difference matters.

A coach asks questions and draws the answer out of you. A consultant hands you the plan. A therapist works clinically, with the past and with what's injured. A mentor has walked the road and tells you what she learned on it.

What I do is the fourth one, with the research to back it. I've trained as a coach and I use it. But I'm not going to pretend I'm neutral about this, and I'm not going to pretend I learned it in a classroom.

Discernment is the brand's own word for a reason. Intuition sends you a message. Discernment is what dissects that message and decides what to do about it.

Most of the women I talk to have plenty of intuition and no working access to discernment, because discernment is the one depletion takes offline first.

None of it makes me a therapist. I'm not a licensed clinician and I'm not a certified somatic practitioner. This framework is research-informed and experience-built, and it is education, not treatment. I'm not going to regulate your nervous system. I'm going to show you what depletion does to who you choose, and give you the practices that keep you out of it. When something needs a practitioner in the room, I'll say so and I'll refer you out.
